An introduction to new work in bronze and oil on canvas.

I am currently developing some new bronze sculptures based on various images. For example, three recents works are being cast of the same forms with different presenations. All new works will be on display at The Grand Hand Gallery in St. Paul on January 20th.

Another new development in my work is a revisiting of some old ideas. About 8 years ago I was toying with the concept of doing some oil painting based on sculptures. As some of you know, my original experience in art was with painting at Hope College. I wasn't sure how to present the subject matter or really what direction I wanted the painting to go in. While channel surfing on night I saw an interview with the artist Susan Rothenburg and found myself intrigued for the first time in a long time with another artists work. The approach is what fascinated me. I then checked out a video at the library in which Susan was interviewed. Her comments again perked my interest in many things; subject matter, presenation, process, the 'art business' but primarily painting. I have since completed two small oils which include subject matter I am familiar with through sculpture but the process and the painting are much more involved than ever before. As I continue to complete work it will be uploaded to the site and further thoughts will follow as I explore my ideas on canvas.
